Keeping the main thing, the main thing.

Lately, I have been thinking about priorities and how they affect our lives. With so many “voices” vying for our time, it is hard to know how to keep things in their proper order. The list of responsibilities seems endless at times with God, family, church, kids activities, personal health etc.  I am often asking, “Lord, how can I keep all of these things in their proper place and order?”

God clearly says in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Okay, now I know that I am to put God first as a believer, but what about all of the rest of life’s stuff?  I am a person who likes lists so I want to get out my pen and paper and make my list. God is number one!  What about the rest?  Well, family comes second, then church, then…

God has reminded me recently that He doesn’t want me to make a list but to integrate God’s kingdom into everything. Let me put it this way, instead of a pie chart where one slice is church, another slice is family, and so on (Of course, the biggest slice is God!), there is a better way to view this.  A better visual is to keep God center in the pie chart at the hub so that He is involved in every area of my life whether it is kids’ activities or church!  Riding in the car to my child’s sporting event can become a “Kingdom” moment when I share what God is doing in my life with my child! Doing house chores can be turned into a “Kingdom” moment as I pray for people I know who are in need. Wow, seeking to put God first in everything can actually happen!

We have often heard the saying, “Keep the main thing the main thing.” That “thing” is keeping God first in every area of my life.  For me, that sure beats making a list, unless my wife, Cindy, wants me to go grocery shopping then I make a list!
